Journée Vélocio

22 june 2003

The "Journée Vélocio" was created in 1922 for the Paul de Vivie memory, whose nickname was Vélocio (1853-1930), apostle of the multiple gear bicycle and "inventive" of the touring bicycle.

In this time, Saint-Etienne was the capital of the bicycle with an important capacity of innovation and production. It is there that the first derailleurs were created.

This type of demonstration was used by each manufacturer to show the superiority of its derailleur on competition. Three principal marks were thus opposed in the demonstrations and contests: L'As, Le Chemineau, Le Cyclo.

It's with a derailleur Cyclo 3 gears model 1950 that I took part in the Journée Vélocio of Haut-Pilat in June 2003.

We start from Saint-Genest-Malifaux, close to Saint-Etienne and we ride throught splendid undulating landscapes. There are several courses with in central point the rise of the Republic collar (1 100 m).

It's a very well made organization and this day is a very sympathetic one.
